TIN CAN MAN
Directed by Ivan Kavanagh

I don’t say it that often, but every now and then a work of true genius comes the way of MUFF. Such is it with Ivan Kavanagh’s Irish fever dream, “Tin Can Man”. It reminded me of seeing “Eraserhead” for the first time, in its pure, unassailable intensity. One of the best new films we have ever played at MUFF – “Tin Can Man” is a must see at MUFF 9. The film is about a young man, Pete (Patrick O’Donnel), who’s gal splits up with him and who has a boss breaking his balls. But this is nothing, until a knock on his door late one long dark night of the soul. At the door is Dave, his ‘neighbour’, who wants to use his phone. What follows is one of the most harrowing and disturbing cinema experiences I have seen this decade. Think “Funny Games” meets “Eraserhead”... Intense is a word that just doesn’t quite cover the experience of “Tin Can Man”. Shot in B&W using mainly torch light, the film has its own distinct aesthetic. Michael Parle’s Dave is one of the scariest screen bad guys I have ever seen. The performances all round are immaculate. The mood of the film is utterly relentless. Imagine spending a whole film with Robert Blake from “Lost Highway” and you might have an idea about how cool “Tin Can Man” is. A metaphor for something, surely? Is it Ireland under the IRA perhaps, or the relentless horror and oppression of life in 21st century democracies? “Tin Can Man” is a masterpiece. I predict the two leads and the director of this film will all be going onto big things, so see it now! Ten out of ten. Yes, really! Don’t miss our Closing Night spectacular and the MUFF awards.
SIN SHOES
Directed by Jose Raoul Palomar

An abstract and very well made film about a murder or something odd going on in a rural Australian house. It’s 13 minutes long and could easily have been part of David Lynch’s Inland Empire. Palomar is a short filmmaker to watch.
Complimentary Grolsch Beer and fingerfood following the MUFF Awards presented after TIN CAN MAN.
