PRESS RELEASE - JUNE 8 2001

"The 2nd Melbourne Underground Film Festival" - July 5 to 15

Well its MUFF time again children of the revolution and we are here to give you the scoop on this year's program, forums and colouring in contests.

This years theme: The Decline & Fall of the Roman Empire part 2.

Added to this thematization we are gonna play some films!

Opening night "Four Jacks" a kick ass action/comedy about a group of restaurant owners and the murderous games they play. With knock out Thespian turns from Lachy Hulme and Tommy "Gogo mobile" Dysart this opening night with after party at Bond bar is not to be missed.

We have part deux of our "Retrospective of Australian Cult Cinema" with the likes of "Ladykiller" a Super 8 American Psycho meets Godard mutation. Plus many others from the archives of OZ film kultur.

Michael Helms of "Fatal Visions" infamy curates the "New Zealand Subterranean cinema" featuring a special retro on "Lord of the Rings" Herr Direktor Peter Jackson. With a pile of other goodies from our transgressive trans-Tasman cousins including "The Irrefutable Truth about Demons"(not %100 confirmed yet), "Aberrration", "Heaven", "The Ugly" and "Death Warmed Up". Kiwi mania at MUFF 2001. Expect Q&A's and special guests!

Be frightened by our "Censorship 2001" forums and film screenings showing films so controversial we can't even reveal their titles yet. We shall raise the problem of censorship and the how and the why of this binding of freedom of expression and speech and the many disturbing forms it takes.

Then we have our competition for MUFF best film featuring highlights such as hot Aussie produced movies "Down and out with the Dolls" and "The Heist" from Whytehouse productions, "Instant Karma" (AUS), "Blue Neon" (AUS), "Rock n roll Frankenstein" (USA), "Das Zimmer"( Ger) and "The Curse" (USA).

Lookout also for our "Dogme Day Afternoon" featuring a marathon session of unseasoned Lars Von Trier inspired guerilla films like "Camera: Dogme #15," "Chetzemoka's Curse: Dogma #10," "Diapason: Dogme #11" (the first Italian Dogme film!!)...essential MUFF viewing in 2001.

We are presenting "The Klaus Initiative" named after bad boy of German cinema Klaus Kinski, a selection of demented shorts and weird documentaries ranging in topics as diverse as raping Steven Spielberg to the dangers of plastic to the terrors of Star Wars fandom.

This and much more trouble awaits at the Second "Melbourne Underground Film Festival" running July 5 to 15 across three venues "Cinemedia at Treasury Theatre," Kaleide" and "Storey Hall" at RMIT. Hang out and hop to it at the MUFF Club at Pony. There'll be more here on the trusty ole website for more details about tickets, more events like Greenfilm and live executions (maybe). Be sure to tell your Mamma, as we beat a trail of festival originality and vitality aimed to have your eyeballs a-popping in excitement.
